Can I claim med exps I paid for my 25-yr old son who is atndg college and files his own tax return? I covered his med ins premiums and all out-of-pocket medical costs.

He made too much money last year so I could not claim him as a dependent, so he filed his own tax return, but I did pay all his medical expenses because his job did not offer insurance benefits. Can I claim those expenses on my return?

Yes, you can deduct the medical expenses.

IRS says that you can include medical expenses you paid for an individual that would have been your dependent except that:

  1. He or she received gross income of $4,050 or more in 2016,
  2. He or she filed a joint return for 2016, or
  3. You, or your spouse if filing jointly, could be claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2016 return.
