Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

Q. Can I claim deductions working from home, but not for my own business?

A. Simple answer: No.  Regular W-2 employees may not deduct job expenses, including use of their home.

That said, it depends on what "working from home" means, in your case. What do you do, how are you paid and how is that pay reported.   The IRS considers anything on a form 1099-NEC to be self employment income. The IRS also considers undocumented cash income (no W-2 or 1099), for work performed, to be self employment income.
