Can I claim 1 on my W4 and not claim my child on my tax return? I make more than the $75k child tax credit upper limit before they start deducting.

My fiancé and I are currently domestic partners.  I will make $100k+ this year and she will make around $10k this year. We think it will be best for her to claim our child on her return, but would like to know if it will hurt us if I claim 1 dependent on my W4.

Thank you.

Are you Registered Domestic Partners? If so, in which state?

What makes you think that?

It will probably work out best if she claims the child, but it may be best to try it out both ways when you prepare your tax returns.

As far as 'hurting' you, yes, your refund would be smaller (or the amount you owe would be larger), but your fiance's refund would probably more than offset that.

For your W-4, if you are claiming "1" allowance, that usually covers yourself.  In most cases, if you wanted to adjust the W-4 for claiming a child, you would claim 2, 3 or 4.

"We can file jointly for state only" As far as I know, Michgan does not permit this for unmarried opposite sex couples.

Claiming an exemption on a W-4 that you give to your employer does affect or reflect the number of dependents you claim or not claim on a tax return.

An exemption on a W-4 is only for calculating the amount of taxes that will be withheld from your wages.  So there is no issue if you want to claim an extra exemption on your W-4.

Except that it may result in an underwithholding situation. Try this tool:

I've used the calculator before.  I entered the same exact information i entered when i filed my 2015 return on turbo tax and it came back 2x what i actually got back,  so i don't really trust the calculators anymore.

The IRS also has a W-4 calculator which may be more accurate - <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/irs-withholding-calculator">https://www.irs.gov/individuals/irs-with...>

She may only claim the child, on her tax return, if the child is her biological or adopted child, as well as yours.
