Can anyone tell why we are not getting the rest of our total child tax credit? For example. I have 5 kids 7-17 $3000 x 5 $15000, received $6000 for Jul-Dec for 4 kids???

never received any money for my 17 yr old, although he qualifies. how do we get or file for the rest of child tax credit? not making sense. How do I get credit for the remaining to include my 17 yr old whom qualifies

If you can use the objective case of WHO, you should be able to figure this out.

You will enter all your children into TurboTax and enter how much Advanced Child Tax Credit you received.

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click "My Info" on the left and verify all children are listed as dependents
  3. Click on the "Search" on the top and type "Child tax credit"
  4. Click on “Jump to Child Tax Credit”
  5. Continue through the questions until the "Tell us about any advance Child Tax Credit payments" screen and enter the advance payment amount from letter 6914.
  6. Continue through the questions.

Please be aware, when you enter your children and answer some follow-up questions TurboTax adds the full Child Tax Credit to your refund number shown at the top.  But when you enter the Advanced Child Tax Credit payments, your refund shown will go down because now only the remaining part of the Child Tax Credit is included in the refund instead of the full amount.

You can see your remaining Child Tax Care Credit amount on line 28 of Form 1040.

To preview your Form 1040:

  1. Click on "Tax Tools" in the left menu
  2. Click "Tools"
  3. Click "View Tax Summary" in the Tool Center window
  4. Click on "Preview my 1040" on the left

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.   The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.

https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1901539-how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

And…..Ignore that “refund monitor.”  The software STARTS OFF by giving you the full amount of CTC.   When you enter the amounts from your letter, the software reconciles the amount you received with the amount you can still get IF you are eligible to get the other half.     You are NOT losing any of the credit; you are not being taxed on the credit.  Don’t get confused by the reconciled amount.   You got some of it already—-now you get the rest.

If you received the advance payment and are NOT eligible to get the other half, then it will not show up on line 28.  (Such as in some cases where the wrong parent got the advance payments, etc.)

That “refund monitor” should not be taken seriously until every last morsel of your data has been entered.
