The California Foster Youth Tax Credit appears to the the California Earned Income Tax Credit for foster children, older individuals and individuals with an IPIN. Please advise if I misunderstand.
In TurboTax, I am able to meet the qualifications for the California Earned Income Tax Credit for a foster youth older than 18 years of age.
To qualify for the California Earned Income Tax Credit, you must meet all of the following requirements:
If married filing separately, need to meet one of the following two requirements:
Also, both your earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must be less than $31,950.
Note that both earned income and adjusted gross income must meet the dollar limitation.
I am filing single with no dependents and I meet all the qualifications for the California Foster Youth Tax Credit (FYTC) but Turbo Tax is giving me the Available Young Child Tax Credit (YCTC) which is for dependent children under the age of 6. I tried to override form 3514 to remove the YCTC and instead enter the FYTC manually, but it won't let me.
How do i fix this?
We are having the same issue.
I was on the phone for 2 hours on Friday 2/19/26 with TT representative. She couldn't fix this and wanted me to pay $60 for a "Tax Expert" but I refused as I stressed repeatedly that this is not a Tax issue but rather a Software Issue that Turbo Tax needs to fix. The Tax Expert came on and the representative confirmed others are having the same issue. She said it would take 24-72 hours to fix. It is now 4 days and still not fixed. AND on Friday after hanging up the phone I immediately got an email from TT telling me my case # is closed. Stay on this - it needs to be fixed by Turbo Tax.
Yeah - super frustrating! Agreed that it's a software issue and sad they are not helping this particular group of taxpayers get the funds they are entitled to with their tax return!
Turbo Tax has issued an update to the program today and fixed this problem. Update your software and revisit the CA Foster Youth credit and it will populate.
Hello!
I have updated my software but I still do not see the Foster Care Tax credit available. How do I access this form?
Sincerely,
Sophie
@Idonotliketurbotax TurboTax is currently working on updates to California Form 3514 with regards to the Foster Youth Tax credit and the update is not scheduled to be in place until after the April 15th tax deadline.
Because the form will not be ready in time to meet the filing deadline, you have some options available to you.
Waiting to file - You are still able to e-file your Federal return without filing your California return. California does not require you to file a special form for a filing extension as those extensions are granted automatically. Once the TurboTax update is in place, you can make the edits needed to claim the Foster Youth Tax credit and e-file your return. CAUTION: An extension of time to file is not an extension of time to pay. If you believe that you will have a balance due to California, you should make efforts to pay that balance due by the April 15th deadline. The California FTB website has more information on payments on extension.
File now and amend later - You can file your California tax return now to meet the deadline. After the CA Form 3514 is updated in TurboTax and your California return and refund (or payment for a balance due) has processed, file an amendment to your California return to claim the Foster Youth Tax credit.
