Are unreimbursed travel expenses to attend scientific conferences (as Invited speaker) qualified as deductible business expenses?

I am emeritus professor and an active scientist; I am invited to conferences for which my university does not provide support.

Are unreimbursed travel expenses to attend scientific conferences (as Invited speaker) qualified as deductible business expenses?

UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019

No - Unfortunately, job-related expenses for most employees are no longer deductible for tax years 2018-2025

.

The only employees that can deduct expenses now are:

  • Armed Forces reservists
  • Qualified performing artists
  • Fee-basis state or local government officials
  • Employees with impairment-related work expenses
