Only donations to recognized charities are deductible on your tax return--although that was a very kind and generous thing to do. What you gave would be considered a gift, and gifts are not deductible.

Some employers do establish non-profit foundations to accept donations for various purposes, including employees who fall on hard times. These would be a tax deductible donation if you have a receipt that says so. However, most employee benefit funds are not set up as separate non-profits. You would have to ask your employer if you aren't sure.
