How the standard deduction works
Even if you have no other qualifying deductions or tax credits, the IRS lets you take the standard deduction on a no-questions-asked basis. The standard deduction reduces the amount of income you have to pay taxes on.
When to claim the standard deduction
Hey Critter-3! Thanks for the help. How do I add this $16623.75 to her Federal Medical Expenses? when I go back into the Medical Expenses section in Deductions it just keeps telling me that the Standard Deduction is best for my mom.
Thank you for your help!
You have to meet two difficult thresholds in order to deduct medical expenses. Only the amount that is OVER 7.5% of your mother's AGI "counts" as a medical expense. And then you still have to get over the threshold of her standard deduction in order to get an itemized deduction.
