APTC question related to getting married the end of 2025. Can anyone explane the rationale in how they handle the APTC adjustment?

So in 2025 I qualified for $720/month of APTC (~$8600/yr).  In December of 2025 I was married, I realized that would change my tax filling status to Married/Jointly for all of 2025 but I rationally assumed any change in combined income would/should only alter my APTC for that final month when I was actually married, the other 11 months the APTC accurately reflected my income and the APTC was correct.  However as I went through the 8962 worksheet it became painfully clear the IRS has different ideas on rationality.

When I applied for the adjustment based on the month we were married it simply sliced the combined income level for those 11 months by 50%, which basically at the new combined income levels did nothing to allow me to keep the APTC credits for those 11 months.  So now we owe an additional $8600 to pay back credits that had been correctly allocated for 11 of the 12 months?

Why doesn't the adjustment simply wait until December line item on the 8962 to apply the combine income??   I'm having a hard time explaining this one to my new wife.

So if I understood how much the IRS would penalize me for getting married last year I might have moved the wedding date out a month (though my wife may have other ideas).  I

Unfortunately, while the advanced premium tax credit is based on your situation at the time it is received, the actual credit is reconciled based on the full-year tax situation.

Marriage is one of many things that can adversely impact the credit calculation as the tax return treats you as married for the entire year for all purposes, including calculation of the credit.

Congratulations and best wishes on your marriage!

If you want the rational, you'll need to contact/ask the members of Congress of 2010.  But as it is, that is what the law says.
