Am I able to claim depreciation on my primary home if I use my home office exclusively to run my business?

Yes. You can claim depreciation on the business-use portion of your home.

 

  • Depreciation is based on the business-use percentage (for example, home office square footage)
  • Only the building is depreciated, not the land

To enter your home office information in TurboTax:

 

  1. Go to Wages & Income
  2. Scroll down to Self-Employment and click Start
  3. You will see a category for "Income", as well as a category for "Expenses", click Add expenses for this work
  4. Select the Home Office box, then Continue and then answer the questions regarding your home office

 

Note that any depreciation taken for the home office will need to be recaptured when the home is sold.
