After repeated tries, the HSA interview still won't offer me a place to enter non-payroll HSA contributions. I've manually re-entered my W2; didn't fix it. What can I do?

This amount doesn't get entered in the W-2 section.

Here is how to navigate to make the entry:

  1. Click on Federal Taxes,  Deduction & Credits
  2. Choose HSA, MSA Contributions
  3. Continue until you see a page titled "Let's enter (your name's) HSA contributions" which will show any deductions already computed from your W-2 in a box that is greyed out, and another box for contributions you personally made.
  4. Enter the amount you personally made.

Hi MindyB, thanks, yes, I know that the HSA contributions screen is supposed to come up in the HSA interview section, not the W2 section, what I'm saying is, that screen you describe in the HSA section never appears. After some research, old TurboTax advice was to reset your HSA section by deleting all the information and, if necessary, manually entering your W2 to ensure accuracy. I did that. Despite trying everything, I still cannot get it to offer that "Let's enter Sarah's contributions" screen.

When I choose Deductions and Credits, I see this Tax Breaks summary, which has no entry for HSA contributions for 2025, I click on the edit screen.

When I click "Edit" next to HSA, MSA Contributions, I get these screens:

  1. Select the health-related accounts you had in 2025 (I select HSA)
  2. 1099-SA Summary (It shows only my company's contributions and my payroll contributions)
  3. Was SARAH covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2025? (I answer yes)
  4. Do any of these situations apply to SARAH? (Of the 6 situations, none do)
  5. What type of HDHP coverage did SARAH have during 2025? (I click that I was covered by a Family plan every month of the year)
  6. Let's review what type of coverage SARAH had in 2024 (it lists every month, and Family Plan, which was true, so I hit continue.

The next screen I get is this summary screen, which doesn't even have a line for employee contributions, whether or not they were made via payroll and therefore captured on my W2. I had both payroll contributions and non-payroll contributions in 2025.

So please tell me: How can I correct this so my HSA contributions are captured ? Thank you!

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number  (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

I have reviewed your tax return using the token number.  I was able to generate an HSA contribution personally made.  Please follow these steps.

In TurboTax Online, return to My Info and answer the questions about the taxpayer, spouse and dependent children.  Under the spouse, add an occupation and state of residence.

Make sure that married filing jointly has been selected.

Select Federal then Deductions & Credits.

Scroll down to 1099-SA, HSA, MSA.  Click to the right.

Continue to the screen Select the health-related accounts you had in 2025.  Select the health-related account you had in 2025, both TP and SP should now be listed.  Select Health Savings Account for the second taxpayer.

At the screen Let’s enter XX HSA contributions, contributions personally made are available.

Your HSA Summary will reflect the contributions personally made.

Follow these steps to view your income tax return.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click on Tax Tools.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Click on View Tax Summary.
  • Click on Preview my 1040.
  • The entry will be reported on Line 10 Federal 1040 and Line 13 Part II Schedule 1.

Hi, that doesn’t work for me because I don’t want to file jointly with my spouse. We live in separate states and file separately; I support my children in my household and file as head of household. This should not prevent me from claiming my HSA Contributions. Can you help me figure out how to do that while still filing as head of household?
