Adoption name change on tax forms

I filed federal forms, can I do a name change. I adopted my granddaughter so her last name is different from the one on my return

My files were transported to this year with my granddaughters birth name .  I now have her social security card with her adopted name which is my name. Should I wait for taxes then file an amended form with adoption information included?

The name used on the tax forms must match the social security number as on record with the Social Security Administration.  To have them officially changed, go to https://faq.ssa.gov/link/portal/34011/34019/Article/3749/How-do-I-change-or-correct-my-name-on-my-So....  If you have the tax forms completed for this year (using the old name) I would wait at least until you get your refund ad then file the name change as above (otherwise the records may get crossed which will just delay the processing of your tax forms.
