According to the IRS Foreign Exchange student income is to be reported on line 16 through 19 of Schedule A (Form 1040), how do I get there to input that information?

According to the IRS, https://www.irs.gov/publications/p526/ar02.html#en_US_2012_publink1000229664  We can deduct up to $50 per month AND "Qualifying expenses.   You may be able to deduct the cost of books, tuition, food, clothing, transportation, medical and dental care, entertainment, and other amounts you actually spend for the well-being of the student."

Then it says "How To Report

Report your charitable contributions on lines 16 through 19 of Schedule A (Form 1040)."

But I don't see how I get to that section on Turbo Tax?

For reporting purposes, you will treat it as if donating cash to the charity.  As the maximum amount for deduction is $50 a month, you will be allowed to claim up to $50x12=$600 for a year.

Please follow :

  • Open (continue) your return in TurboTax.
  • At the upper right corner, In the search box, type in donations and press Enter
  • Select the "Jump to donations" link in the search results.
  • Next screen, answer Yes to Did you make any donations to charity?
  • Next screen, answer No to the Its Deductible questions
  • Next screen, Let's enter your donations one at a time-  enter the organization name and select Add under Money
  • Next screen, Tell us about the money you gave to the charity, enter the amount.
