5695 Carryforward from 2022 to 2023

I completed this step,  Do You Have a 2022 Home Energy Credit to Carry Forward?.  Select Yes and then enter the amount from your 2022 Form 5695 Line 16. It has what i got for 2022 credit, but for 2023 it is showing zero even though it said Good News your getting such and such back. Are things still wonky?

Yes, the Deductions & Credits summary shows $0 if your only Energy Credit is a 2022 carryover. The summary only shows a 2023 Energy Credit.

That doesn't mean you aren't getting the credit carryover. The credit carryover is shown on line 5a of Schedule 3.

You can preview your return to see the figure:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Select Tax Tools from the left-side menu, then Tools.
  3. Select View Tax Summary in the pop-up box.
  4. Select Preview my 1040 from the left-side menu.
  5. You will see the Form 1040 with Schedules 1, 2 and 3.
  6. When you are done, select Back from the left-side menu.

5695 Carryforward from 2022 to 2023

Ok i found 5a and i do see the amount there, but why isn't it showing and added to my total? Are they not giving me any of the money from the carryforward? and its under the Nonrefundable what does that mean? It's so confusing this year and a pain.

A nonrefundable credit applies when you have no tax liability or less liability than your credit.  This would be the reason you have a carry over from last year.  You did not have enough tax liability to fully use the credit. Look at line 16 on your 1040, then also look at line 24. If the amount on line 16 is less than the full credit, then this is the maximum amount of the credit you use this year will be that number.  If you have other credits, that may also reduce the tax liability, this may also reduce the amount of the credit you receive.  You will find this on line 24.  If line 24 is $0, then you received one of more credits that brought your taxes down to $0.  If this is the case, and you had multiple nonrefundable credits, you may not get the full credit for one or more of the credits.
