I know all about how to do it, done it multiple years since I retired, on medicare and have no more HDP plan. My wife and are both retired using my HSA account for medical expenses only.
I always answer all the questions about having an HDP plan as no, and all expenses being medical.
But in the past it would pop-up a question for each-and-every-month of the year to say that I had no HDP coverage for that month and I would check each month as "no".
This year that question no longer pops up (it just keeps showing in the interview process that:
(the interview question is "available" - even tho I've answered all the questions and the form 8889-T is being generated - but when I look at the details of this form it looks fine, except The check boxes for having "no HDP" coverage for each month are not checked for "no" like they always used to be.
Of course the review process, is not showing that there are any "errors" - so maybe this OK, but
it is definitely a change from how last years 2024 1099-SA interview process went.
I must admit - it never made much sense to me why I had to check every month with a "NO" for HDP coverage, since I've been on medicare only using the HSA account for medical expenses now for the last 7yrs. Again, the exact form generated appears to be 8889-T (and definitely, does not have the check-boxes for each month of 2025 checked for "no": albeit I can override the form and change all these to "no" manually)
I understand how to do the HAS 1099-SA entry, and have been doing so for
7yrs since I retired, and no longer carry any HDPlan, because on medicare
The problem is that the interview process just keeps saying “available” rather
Than being “complete” – even after I answer all the questions correctly about
Not having any HDP coverage for year 2025. I have also looked at the actual form 8889-S
that is generated by this interview process – and that’s where issue shows up:
The form does not have all the boxes checked for “no” for HDP coverage for each month
of 2025 – probably because the interview process no longer asks this question for each
month like it did in years past, including year 2024 last year.
Anyway – I’ve tried deleting this form, doing the interview and adding all 1099-SA form info
Back again correctly for “interview-entry” and it just keeps showing the HSA-SA section as
Being “available”, rather than completed correctly.
I must say it never did make any sense to me why the interview in all previous years, 2024
Included – always asked about each and every month whether I had HDP coverage, when
I’ve been on medicare and had no HDP plan for the last 7yrs.
However, the 2025 form 8889-T continues to look incorrect because the section on
HDP coverage for each month of 2025 does not have the “no” box checked for HDP coverage

We would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file, which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

Hi, Karis
Sorry did not get back to you, but the main problem I ran into here
is how to do communications with you, and the fact that there are
two places I can sign in with turbotax account.
Bottom line is I got an email in my email(gmail) and I tried to reply
to it - but somehow what was sent to me does not allow me to reply
(it's gets a DNS domain-name no found when I do reply to the gmail)
Now, I'm finally back on this "chat" area.
I'm not sure we need to pursue this much further - because I think I've
found out the issue I was really trying to fix before I started looking
at the details of the 8889-T, it's the worksheet part of these forms that
is only getting the checkbox for Dec or 2025 checked for No HDP plan
coverage, rather than all the other months which are un-checked.
My guess is that the IRS maybe doesn't care that these check boxes or filled
out anymore.
OR - my real problem would be that the interview process no longer
asks you for each month, since it already asks if you have HDP coverage
I say no, then it asks if I have medicare, and I say yes.
So I'm pretty sure the way the from is filled out is somehow OK -
since it is the worksheet that doesn't have the check-boxes.
The real problem that I still have is that in the "step-by-step"
interview, I can never get the "Available Now" to change
to showing that is done, even tho the 8889-T gets created
the same each time(as is probably OK, as noted above)
I have screen-shots of all this - but this "chat" way of communicating
is pretty limited for actually exchanging detailed information.
I see know where here to upload screen-shots, etc.
That's why I thought I could reply to the email message in my
gmail-account.
After testing a scenario in TurboTax to match your situation, it appears that everything is being filled out on Form 8889 correctly. Since you did not make a contribution to the HSA, the coverage information shown in the Smart Worksheets for each month is not needed. This information is needed when a contribution limit must be calculated. Additionally, the Smart Worksheet is not considered to be an actual part of Form 8889 that is filed with the IRS. It is used by TurboTax to fill in the Form 8889.
I do not have any advice regarding the section continuing to show 'available now' even after it has been completed. As long as the form is completed correctly and your electronic filing is not hindered, this should not be a problem. Hopefully it will be corrected with a new update though since it can cause some confusion.
