1099-misc form involving court case about a vehicle. What do I enter for the "I work in..." section?

You may be entering your 1099-MISC form incorrectly. If this was from a lawsuit or court judgement, see the entry instructions below.

The 1099-MISC form a catchall tax form—the "MISC" in 1099-MISC stands for miscellaneous—so it's possible to get a 1099-MISC that wasn't for work.

Here are few examples of why you'd get a non-work 1099-MISC:

  • Lawsuit settlement
  • Prize winnings
  • Board of director's fee
  • Manufacturer's incentive payment
  • Working interest in gas and oil property

If you got a 1099-MISC for one of these reasons or another non-work situation, then we'll help you enter it. Here's what to do:

  1. Type 1099-misc in the search box.
  2. Click on the Jump to 1099-misc link.
  3. This will take you to the 1099-MISC entry screen.
  4. Enter your information from your form into the corresponding box. (Note: if you don’t see your box number, check the box “my form has other info in boxes 1-18.” By doing this, the other boxes on the form will open.)
  5. On the Does one of these uncommon situations apply? screen, scroll down to This was money from a lawsuit settlement.
  6. Continue and answer the follow-up questions about your 1099-MISC income.
