I am attempting to input information for two 1099-DIVs that I received. The 1099-DIV looks exactly the same ask the past 4 years from this institution (went back to check). When I get to the page in TurboTax, the only option I have is to insert the FEIN and hasn't been in previous years either.
I opened last year's return and TurboTax 2023 has a checkbox to say the FEIN was not included. This option is not available in 2024.
How do I insert these 1099-DIVs without the FEIN?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Can you clarify the TurboTax program you are using (Online or Desktop) and how you entered the 1099-DIV (Typed or uploaded)
I tested and was not asked for a EIN or FEIN.
I am using TurboTax Deluxe - the Desktop version. I am typing in the information.
Steps to get to what I'm seeing:
1. Federal Taxes -> Wages and Income -> I'll Choose
2. Interest and Dividends -> Dividends on 1099-DIV -> Update
3. Scroll down to "Add investments" and click
4. Skip import
5. Click the Dividends / 1099-DIV -> Continue
You may need to update your program by using the Online menu option and then Check for Updates. I followed the steps you detailed and I don't see a request for an ID number:
Also, you may need to clear the cache on your computer. This will very depending on what internet browser you use. You can google how to do that for your browser.
Hi Thomas,
I appear to have the most up to date version available, with the most recent check being done a few minutes before I made this post.
If it helps, Help->About->Version shows that I am currently running: (added a screenshot, the forum detected this as a phone number)
I have cleared the cache for both Firefox and Chrome. I'm not sure which browser is being used in the background for these updates.
Please clarify your question.
On your 1099-DIV do you have a value in the Payors TIN box?
Please contact us again to provide some additional details. or with any additional questions.
John,
No. I do not have a Payors TIN, or FEIN. I have the Recipient's TIN.
I have Payor's name, street address, city, state 9zip, and phone number. No ID number.
My question:
How do I either tell TurboTax I don't have these IDs, like I could in the previous years' versions?
Did you try ignoring that field entirely....enter the data (you do need to enter the "Received From" name) and just move on without it?

The only time I got that Fein field it to appear in the interview is if I was reusing a 1099-DIV form, that already had just the FEIN filled in, and then I deleted it in the interview (or something like that).
And if I left that field empty, then the next time around it wasn't presented.

Might also happen if you uploaded a picture or PDF file to start the -DIV, bit I haven't tested that.
When I ignore it, TurboTax flags it as "Needs Info."
As a work around I suggest you use 00-0000000 or 12-3456789.
1) When it posted the error, are you sure it wasn't really referring to the "Received From" field. Make sure that is filled in. You can't have a 1099-DIV that came from (blank or undetermined). Then leave the FEIN empty....or put yoru cursor in it and hit the backspace and delete keys a few times in case it has some non-displaying characters in it.
2) the 00-0000000 might be an option...but not sure.
Still an issue?
3) Go to Forms Mode, and Delete that 1099-DIV entirely. Return to the interview, and enter it again manually thru the interview.
a) Start into the 1099-DIV section
b) Scroll down to the blue "+Add Investments"
c) Next page, go to lower rt corner and "Skip Import"
d) Next Page select the Dividends box, then lower Rt "Continue"
e) Next page enter "Received From" box and any data below it. Should be no FEIN there...but who knows??
Thanks SteamTrain. I am sure the error is referring to the FEIN. I have filled out the Received from and left the FEIN blank - that's when the error appears.
I followed your step 3. Unfortunately, the field still appears.
I've got nothing.
Other than trying to get the FEIN from the issuer.
For any decent $$ amount, they should be sending you, or allowing you to download the 1099-DIV form, which would have the FEIN on it....but you have to look carefully at their form...sometimes the call that number by a somewhat different name. Payer ID number, Federal ID number...etc etc.
Hi,
I have the same issue. Nowhere on the 1099-DIV form does it have FEIN or any other numbers that look like a FEIN.
Thanks
Luke
