Worked and lived in NJ and Utah

My daughter worked and lived in NJ while at college and earned about 4000. Then she moved to Utah, got a job out there, and earned about 4500.

Since she changed residence and states, does she file in both states and just pay NJ tax on the 4000 and Utah tax on the 4500?

Worked and lived in NJ and Utah

She is a part year resident for both states and would only pay tax on the income from the state she was living in at the time. she is under the filing threshold for NJ. Please see Page 3 of NJ PY.

She is also not required to file for UT.

Who Must File?

You must file a Utah TC-40 return if you:

  1. are a Utah resident or part-year resident who must file a federal return,
  2. are a nonresident or part-year resident with income from Utah sources who must file a federal return, or
  3. want a refund of any income tax overpaid.

To file a Utah return, first complete your federal return, even if you do not have to file with the IRS. You need the federal return information to complete your Utah return.
