Worked and Lived in Maryland for 30 Days- made ~16800, paid 711 in taxes to maryland, Turbo Tax says I owe 400 dollars more

Something seems off and I am trying to figure it out. Why would i owe $400 more to Maryland, which would bring up the total % to 6.6%? I am not a large earner, just received a large commission during june.

It depends.

If you worked and lived in Maryland for 30 days, it appears that your stay there was temporary.  If so, you would need to file in Maryland as a nonresident.

Maryland filing requirements

When you prepare your tax return in TurboTax, you would need to prepare your nonresident income tax return first.  This will ensure you are able to claim a credit for any taxes paid in Maryland on your resident state income tax return.

In addition, if you happen to live in a state that has a state reciprocal agreement with Maryland, you may not even need to file a tax return in Maryland.  Please see the following link to determine if this would apply to you.

State reciprocal agreements

Essentially, without knowing more details, it is hard to pinpoint why your tax liability is higher than you calculated it to be.  But the above are just a couple of items that could potentially affect your overall tax liability within Maryland.

my employer took out 711 in taxes, i was a resident of maryland for those 30 days, so I am filing as a part-year resident. As a part time and as a non resident, turbo tax is still saying i owe 400.

Did you subtract your non-Maryland income in TurboTax? Maryland starts with your total federal income (adjusted gross income from your federal return). A part-year resident should subtract all income earned outside Maryland, otherwise TurboTax will compute tax on your total income.

You may also owe Maryland due to local tax. Your employer may not have withheld local tax or the correct local tax. Also double-check the program to see whether the county or area where you lived on the last day of your Maryland residence is correct, as well as the City and Town.
