Not sure what you are trying to ask. When you prepare your 2020 return you will be asked if you received the stimulus money in 2020. Just answer the question. Any other credits you are supposed to get on your 2020 tax return are calculated apart from the stimulus money. And....the stimulus money is not taxable.
I keep reading that it is not taxable, however, when I completed a tax refund estimators with TurboTax, when I input the stimulus check amount the estimated refund was that exact amount lower than what my usual refund is. No pay change, no tax bracket jump, no changes to anything other than stimulus check.
I appreciate any insight into this matter!
Some of the tax estimators, and even the TTX software itself, will include the stimulus payment right from the beginning...so the Refund shown includes the stimulus payments....until you tell it how much you already received...then it takes away that amount.
So if the shown refund seems too low this year, it would have to be due to something else either not entered correctly/completely....or if it's shown in a estimator APP...those are pretty basic and cannot take all situations into account......so it's a "crude estimate" only.
Yes----it seems the "refund monitor" displays the stimulus money at the beginning, and later if the user says they received some stimulus money in 2020 it "removes" it from the display so the user gets the incorrect idea that they have lost something. Unfortunate timing---wish the display would leave that stimulus out of the process until the end.
I appreciate everyone’s responses, but it’s not just the estimator that I’m using. Why would my return be over $3,000 less than every other year, when the stimulus package is the one and only change
We cannot tell you why your "normal" refund is less. It is very early and we do not know what you have entered or what tax documents you might still be waiting for. Most income and tax documents have not even been issued yet. They start coming in January and February. Many of the forms are not even ready yet.
We cannot see your screen or your tax return. We do not know if you have a child who turned 17, for instance--which would mean you lost the child tax credit. We do not know if you had less withheld from your paychecks. ETC. ETC ETC Wait until ALL of your 2020 information has been entered completely and correctly from the documents you will be receiving in early 2021. Then compare your 2019 tax return to the 2020 return. The lines are different so it will be tricky but go slowly and carefully and see what the difference is. IF there is really a big difference when you have all the information.
When you prepare your 2020 return you will be asked if you received the stimulus money in 2020. Just answer the question.
I'm told it then asked you how much you received. I was married at the time and will be filing my taxes for 2020 as single. However, we were not together in 2020 when stimulus was received. Do I put half the amount that was received, since it was split?
Yes, you will enter the portion that was for you and any children you are claiming.
