Will money earned in Puerto Rico during hurricane relief be listed as earnings in another state? We live and work in SC.
No, it will not be listed as another state tax (PR is a US Possession but you do not need to report it as such unless there was PR tax withheld). As a resident of SC, you will need to pay SC state tax, as well as federal tax on this income, but not Puerto Rico tax.
If it is self-employment income, you will need to list it with other 1099-MISC income.
If not, please use the following to report it:
- Click Federal Taxes -> Wages & Income and scroll down to Less Common Income
- Go to the last selection, Miscellaneous Income and click Start
- Go to the last option, Other reportable income and click Start
- When it asks, "Any other reportable income?" say yes and then type in a description and the amount to report it on your tax return.
