I live in California. My daughter lives in Hawaii. She wants me to do her taxes for her. Will I be able to just pay for an extra state and file her taxes for her?

I want to make sure that when I file my return it defaults to California and that when  I create another tax return for her it defaults to Hawaii.

Yes. I see you're using the Desktop version of the program. When you finish your fed and CA state taxes, you can FILE - START NEW RETURN and start a new tax file for her. Of course, you'll identify she's a HI resident, and when you get to the state taxes part, you'll be able to purchase the HI state download. It's no problem to have multiple state programs merged with the federal program.

If your daughter is married to AD/MIL and that military member's home state is NOT Hawaii, she does NOT have to pay HI state taxes - depending on how she earned that HI based income.

Yes, you can if you are using the CD/Download copy of the program.  The second return will default to HI if you indicate her HI address.

Be sure to first save your return with a name you can tell apart from hers.  If you both have the same first name her return might overwrite yours.  Go up to FILE-SAVE.  Save frequently.
