Why is it trying to make file a state tax return for a state I wasn't a resident of in 2019

I moved to NC in January 2020, entered my mailing address as the NC address but now Turbo tax keeps trying to make me file an NC state return. WHY IS TURBO TAX THE WORST

Since you have a North Carolina address, it selects North Carolina by default.  Simply click Delete beside the North Carolina return and continue filing your return.

The big mistake you might have  made, and need to correct, was that you entered NC as your State of Residence where you entered your Name and SSN   .   (My Info section if you are using Online software...or Personal Info if using the Desktop software )  .  The "State of Residence" you enter there refers to your state at the end of 2019...not where you are now  It is that setting that sets your resident state for 2019 tax purposes.

 

The mailing address can be anywhere, and does not set your resident state in the software...the software knows that  hundreds of thousands of people move states after the 1st of the year, but before filing their prior year's taxes, and the mailing address may not reflect the proper tax state....as-well-as over a million  military personnel who are posted in states other than their HOR state, and are only subject to state taxes in their HOR state.
