First, which New York form are you referring to? The IT-201 or another one?
"state tax review screen" - or are you referring to a screen inside the TurboTax interview? If so, what is the heading at the top of this screen?
Second, which lines are you referring to, that is, on which lines do the numbers you list appear?

Hello, Thank you for your reply. Yes I am referring to a screen within turbo tax. The screen that breaks down taxes for the year. The heading is "your state returns" And below that is "Let's Review Your New York Numbers" The part I am confused about is the numbers right after. Why is the amount taxed higher than the amount we started with? Thank you for your time.
Amount we start with for New York: $36,448
(federal adjusted gross income)
What we can subtract: -$8,000
- Standard deduction
Amount taxed by New York: =$38,648
Referring to Turbo Tax , screen header "your state return, Let's review your NY numbers. year 2020 NY STATE TAX RETURN.
Amount started with for NY FEDERAL AGI = 21,099.00
MINUS STANDARD DEDUCTION = 8,000.00
AMOUNT TAXED = 23,599.00 I/O 13,099.00
Kindly inform me how to proceed.
For both of you:
1. What is the amount line 32 (IT-203) or line 33 (IT-201)?
2. I assume the amount on line 33 (IT-203) or line 34 (IT-201) is $8,000, right?
3. I assume that the amount in line 36 (IT-203) or line 37 (IT-201) is arithmetically the difference (unless you have dependent exemptions).
The important thing is to verify that your actual New York state tax returns are correct.
