You need to identify the states you're working on. What is your resident state, what is the non-resident state
Hi,
Thank you for the reply. The real issue that I have is, I got the job from Arizona on 04/01/2020 when I was in California, and continued to live until 06/01/2020 in California, then moved to Arizona. I haven't any job in California between 01/01/2020 to 04/01/2020 before I got this job from Arizona. I haven't paid any California state tax in my W-2, only for Arizona. I am filling two state tax refund forms, and in California, it is asked for "income tax paid to the other state' section, my tax paid in Arizona and AGI taxed by the other state amount. What do I need to write there, and one more question. If I didn't pay anything for CA state tax in the w-2 form, do I owe something to CA, or because I paid for Arizona, I can show it and don't pay anything to CA? Thank you for your help.
Because you lived in CA, they want to tax your income earned while living there. You have completed your AZ income tax return. For the CA portion, you would enter the 2 months of income earned in AZ and the tax paid on that income. That gives you a credit to the state of CA.
For example:
Say you earn $3,000 / month.
2 months in CA is $6,000 taxable to CA
AZ would be $3k x 8 mo in AZ = $24k total
AZ tax on total, pretend is $1,000
CA income / total AZ income = 6 / 24 = 25%
AZ tax x CA % = $1,000 x 25% = $250 tax paid to AZ for CA credit
