We purchased a second (weekend) home in Maryland. Our primary home is in Virginia and our jobs are in Virginia and DC. Do we need to file a Maryland state tax return?

Only if you rent-out that MD home to others such that you start taking in income from the property..

.....or in the year you decide to make the MD home your primary residence and stay in it more than half of the year
