Turbo Tax State Tax Issue - SC

I moved from OH to SC July of 2025.  I purchased the state tax return programs for SC and NC (since my employer withholds NC tax since I work in Charlotte).   The NC tax credit worked fine but all of my Ohio income is showing as SC income thus giving a false (and large) amount owed.   I also did a ROTH conversion while in Ohio.  How do I adjust SC to only tax on the income I earned since I moved to the state?   I always do my Ohio taxes online and not with Turbo Tax.

You cannot adjust SC to only tax on the income you earned since you moved to the state.  South Carolina does not have a Part Year resident return like most states- so you can choose to file as a Resident or Nonresident.

If you use the Nonresident method, South Carolina only taxes income earned while working in South Carolina.  If you choose the Full-year Resident Method, you report all income, but take a credit for taxes paid to the state you paid to Ohio.

Because you had income from working in North Carolina and income from the ROTH conversion that was Ohio income, you probably would get better results filing this year as a nonresident- your only South Carolina income would be any South Carolina source income.  Go back to the South Carolina section of TurboTax, and indicate that you want to file as a nonresident- and note if you had no South Carolina source income, you would not be required to file.

BUT...note that any interest or dividends, Mutual fund distributions, you received AFTER moving to SC will need to be included in your SC income when filing as-if a Non-resident.  Those amount before your move are not.
