To get to this section of the Iowa interview in TurboTax Online:
You can only deduct this amount if you filed an Iowa return in the years for which you paid the federal tax. You can include only the actual federal tax payments made in 2023, but don't include penalties and interest.
what if i am not using Turbo tax online. There is no "Prior Year Federal Tax" screen. There is a "Enter Your federal Tax Info" but that page incorporates the federal refund from the federal return information, and then lists a variety of federal income tax credits, none of which allow for entry of federal taxes paid in 2023 for a prior year.
By trial and error, I found that Line 18 on Schedule 1 (IA 1040), is filled in by the amount you enter on the third screen, last line:
2022 Federal Extension Payments made with form 4868.
This makes sense because the extension payment for tax year 2022 is made in early 2023, when you actually file the extension.
On the desktop version of TurboTax, there are three different screens that address parts of this issue.
