State requires I file return with same type of deduction as fed. I am filing with stndrd on fed return, but state is stuck on itemized. How do I change on state return?

Initially I was doing itemized on federal, but I had mortgage interest incorrectly so once that was changed it made more sense to just do standard on each.  I can and have changed on the federal return, but it is not changing on the state return as when I go to file and preview the state return it is showing a schedule A with itemized deductions.  I tried deleting out state return and starting over, but that didn't work either.  Any steps I find online are for changing on the federal side.  I know turbo tax selects the one that best fits, but in the state of KS I have to use same deduction type as federal was filed with.  Thank you.

If you haven't done so, erase the data in your federal return, including the mortgage interest deductions and any other itemized deductions you may have listed. First, before you do this however:

  1. Delete/erase your state return again.
  2. Erase all of your itemized deductions that you may have entered into the program, including the mortgage interest.
  3. Now go back and add your state again to see if this makes a difference.

Can you please clarify your question by telling us what state you are working on? The layouts for each state is different in TurboTax because each state has their own laws. Thank you.

The following states allow you to itemize deductions on just the state return: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, and Wisconsin,
