Should CA or TX be my domicile? I moved to TX from CA and plan to be here for 2-3 years, but moving back to CA is also unclear and dependent on other factors.

If you live and work in TX, then you are not a resident of CA.   TX has no state income tax.   CA does have a state income tax.   If you are not working or living in CA, then you are not subject to paying state income tax to CA.

 

You do not mention when you moved from CA to TX.   If it was during the year in 2025, you will need to prepare a part-year return for CA

If you live and work in TX, then you are not a resident of CA.   TX has no state income tax.   CA does have a state income tax.   If you are not working or living in CA, then you are not subject to paying state income tax to CA.

 

You do not mention when you moved from CA to TX.   If it was during the year in 2025, you will need to prepare a part-year return for CA
