No, a Maryland 1099-R should not prompt you to file a nonresident return in Massachusetts unless there is an entry error in the state portion of your federal 1099-R screen. This typically happens because "MA" was accidentally selected or imported into Box 15 (the state field) instead of "MD".
How to Fix the 1099-R Entry
If you've already corrected the state code to "MD" and the prompt persists, try deleting the 1099-R entirely and manually re-entering it rather than using the import feature.
Edit all your 1099-R forms.
Make sure the correct state two letters are in box 15 and actually match what's on your paper foprms
MA=Mass
MD=Maryland

And where do you actually live?
If you are filing MAss taxes because you lived in Mass during 2025, and the 1099-R actually did withhold MD taxes...then you have to file non-Res Maryland to get that withholding back....because MD shouldn't tax the pension if you are living in Mass in 2025.
Or do you actually live in Maryland all this time?
