I was a resident of NY for half the year, and still have a house there, and some dividend income from stocks...but neither me nor my spouse worked last year. Do I have to file a tax form with NY State? (maybe that is the problem with this question?)

If some of the dividends were paid during the time that you were a NY resident, then you have to file a part-year resident return for NY. The dividends that were paid when you were a NY resident are NY source income.
