What does federal return transmitted mean?

It means that you have sent your return to the IRS (or State) to start the steps to process your return, usually within 24 to 48 hours you will get the status of your return (either accepted or rejected)

What does federal return transmitted mean?

Transmitted means the return has been e-filed and is waiting for the IRS to either accept or reject the tax return.

Your tax returns will remain Pending until the IRS starts receiving tax returns. It may be several days after the IRS start date before your tax return gets accepted or rejected.
