Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) that does qualify to be subtracted from Michigan income does not show up on Form 4884. It does show up correctly on Pension Deduction Worksheet.

Yes, you are correct. It depends on your circumstances whether a value will populate on Form 4884.

Regarding Code G: (Qualified government or public pension)
You can subtract certain government or public pension distributions from your Michigan income. These include:
 - Federal civil service
 - Michigan state and local government retirement
 - Tier 2 railroad retirement

Regarding Form 4884, See 2019 MI-1040 Individual Income Tax Book page 19, column two regarding which section of Form 4884 should be completed.

If the older of filer or spouse is born during January 1, 1946 and December 31, 1952, then Form 4884 is not included. The details are included on Schedule 1, line 23.

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

The program informs me that form 4884 will be ready soon and won't let me proceed. My friend received her book in the mail from the state of Michigan and the form 4884 was in it already approved and ready to use.

WHAT is going on here?????

please notify me immediately at [email address removed].

thank you

The state of MI sent the book with the expected final draft. If you look at the state website, you will see the 2020 form is not yet published. Please see State form availability. It shows form 4884 is expected to be available on January 28. Once the state approves the form, we will install it quickly. TurboTax will not file a form until it is actually approved, for your protection.

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

On the state forms list, it says Form 4884 is available for print and e-file, yet, the software will not allow me to move past this portion of my taxes.....is there a number for tech support? What is going on with this?

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

I am also having an issue with this.  The program keeps showing the worksheet for the 4884 and will not let me e-file my return.  It says that when the issue is resolved the message will disappear and I will be able to continue.  Is there a timeframe for a resolution?

So, after many conversations with different specialists, we figured out that it’s not the form 4884 that is the issue, it’s the worksheet that pops up to propagate the form 4884. I’ve seen that it’s supposed to be ready by the 4th, but, nobody I talked to seemed to know.  If you don’t need to file state taxes right away and want to e-file your Federal taxes, go to the main area where it asks if you want to file by paper or e-file. Click “file by paper,” and two boxes will pop up for Federal and State. Under Federal, select eFile, and under State, select “I’m not ready to file.”  Then, you can do what I’m doing and just keep checking back for the form to be ready, at which point we can eFile state.

What irritates me, is that this worksheet automatically pops up due to my early withdrawal of my 401k due to COVID, and form 4884 applies to a very specific group of people for retirement income deduction based off of age, and I 1 billion percent do not qualify. In other words, this worksheet is COMPLETELY useless to myself, and a lot of other people, and we can’t even delete it from the tax forms to go around it.

Thank you for the reply Mike.  That explains it and I appreciate you talking to others to find out what is going on.  I will do as you suggested and file federal now and then wait on the state.  My worksheet is popping up for the same reason as yours is and yes it is irritating.

Not a problem at all! Trust me, I know the frustration and couldn’t leave anybody else hanging haha. I just don’t understand why they have the software set up to automatically trigger that worksheet/form. Every other deduction it asks you if you want to see if you qualify. But oh well. I’m just glad they got form 8915-e figured out so we could at least e-file our federal.

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

I know what it does!!1   WHY IS NOT ON TURBOR TAX??   I tried searching but form 4884 does not show up!!!

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

All I’ve gotten is “our team is working on it really hard, but there’s no date given, blah blah blah”....so frustrating, especially considering it’s probably one of the easiest tax forms to do. I mean, the worksheet is about as straight-forward as can be. But, seems like the only work around is to e-file federal, and hold off on your states until they figure it out.

EVEN MORE FRUSTRATING, is that form 4884 is listed as being available for print AND e-file on their state form availability page.

Michigan Form 4884 - Government pension (Type G) not being subtracted from MI income even though it qualifies.

If the older of filer or spouse is born during January 1, 1946 and December 31, 1952, then Form 4884 is not included. The details are included on Schedule 1, line 23.

If this doesn't apply, you will want to verify your selection in the Retirement and Pension Benefits section of your Michigan State tax return.  Your selection for the Type of retirement and pension benefit is what allows the subtraction from Form 4884 to occur.  If you choose Type N, other income subject to Michigan Tax was designated it will not calculate the subtraction

If your pension is eligible to be subtracted from taxable income pursuant to the MI state income tax guidelines, you would need to choose the applicable type (M, R, G, P or C) .

Here are the steps to verify and/or change your choice for the Type of Retirement and Pension Benefits in Michigan:

·         Sign into your account and click Take me to my return

·         Click on State (in left menu column) and select Continue

·         Select Edit next to Michigan under Status of your state returns

·         Select Edit next to your Retirement Income

·         Select Revisit next to Retirement Income and Pension Deduction

·         Select Edit next to the Retirement form under Retirement Income and Pension Summary

·         Verify and/or change your choice next to Type
