Made a mistake on State Tax

Made a mistake while filing the State Tax, need to make some adjustments on this. Is it better to submit a Superseded Return before the Tax Deadline or Amend Return after the Tax Deadline? In addition, I only made a mistake on the State Tax, and do I need to submit an Amend to the Federal too?
