The law was only signed yesterday. Even the IRS does not know how it will be handled yet.
You are among millions who have now been affected by a mid-tax season change in the tax law. Patience will be necessary.
TurboTax will update the software for the unemployment but there is no timeline yet.
It can take weeks to several months or more for the changes to be made to tax software. First the IRS has to change its forms. The tax software has to be changed; the IRS has to test and approve of the software. Do not expect changes in the software to happen quickly. TurboTax may have more information in the near future AFTER the bill is signed into law, and some more details emerge about how Congress and the IRS will implement the changes.

TT is saying several months- which they will then require and make us pay for an amendment. The IRS is slow, TT does not have to be. It is simple software programming, that would take less than 24hrs to enable.
The IRS has to change its forms. The software that you think can be changed so fast (!) has to be tested and approved by the IRS. Software companies cannot change tax software without approval from the IRS. It is not like changing a X-box game. And....you are not charged for amending a tax return. We do not yet even know if it will be necessary for people to amend. There are Congress members asking the IRS to find a way to re-calculate for people who have already filed. We have no idea yet if that will happen or if it will ultimately become necessary for users who filed already to amend. That is why you will need to wait. If you want to get annoyed at someone----be annoyed that it took Congress months to do this and then finally doing it after over 50 million tax returns had been filed.
Gee, if they could only hire you they wouldn't have to be worried about silly little things like following the LAW and having proper approval before they punched a few keys and updated their already insanely complicated software!?!?!
The process is explained to you nicely above, and as stated no one charges you for an amendment. The IRS has also urged taxpayers to NOT file an amendment for this while they determine if there could be a better solution.
So slow your roll, check your attitude, and chill the !@#$! out. YOU, my dear, are the joke here if this is how you expect things to work in the real, grown-up world.
I called turbo tax and asked them about the unemployment issue and what I should do on 3/14/21, The answers I was given was the bill has not been passed and the bill doesn't effect the umeployment taxes you had to pay on the 2020 income. All are false Turbo Tax does not stay updated on what is going on. Then I was told you could not amend your taxes using Turbo Tax I would have to do it manually. I will not be using Turbo Tax anymore they are okay if everything is straight forward but the one time you have a problem you can't rely on them.

If you have not e-filed yet—-wait. And if you already e-filed and want to amend for this—WAIT.
Please read this very recent news from the IRS:

Fake news....
Once the IRS provides us with guidance on how we can provide them with the necessary information, we will work quickly to update TurboTax.
We will update this article with the latest information here.
