To add a California tax return,
- Click on State taxes down the left hand side of the screen.
- At the screen Status of your state tax returns, select Add another state.
Make sure that you are reporting that you are a resident of the state of Arizona.
To report that, select your state of residence under My Info down the left side of the screen.
If you lived in Arizona all year and your pension reported on a 1099-R reports California withholding,
- You will file an Arizona resident tax return, and
- You will file a California non-resident tax return.
You will request a refund of the California taxes withheld on the California non-resident tax return.
Your Arizona resident tax return may have a balance due because the 1099-R withheld California taxes and not Arizona taxes.
Contract the pension to have the correct state taxes withheld.
