Yes.

TurboTax supports the electronic filing for both Massachusetts and Connecticut.

If your gross income for the taxable year exceeds certain amounts as listed in the following link, you would need to file state income taxes within CT.

Connecticut Filing Requirement threshold

Since you are a resident of Massachusetts, you will need to report your income earned everywhere.  You will then be able to claim a credit for taxes paid to another state on your resident tax return.

To ensure your return is calculated correctly, you will need to confirm a few items:

In the My Info section of TurboTax, confirm that you have entered the correct state information:

  1. Click Edit to the right of your name
  2. Confirm your input under #2 Tell us the state(s) you lived in
  3. Go back to the personal information section, and verify the mailing address and "Other state income" section.  Be sure to answer yes to the question asking "Did you make money in any other states?".

Please note the following as it will affect the calculations:

Make sure you prepare the Nonresident Connecticut state tax returns first.   Be sure to answer the questions correctly to ensure only income sourced to that state specifically are reported.

Once you have entered all of the nonresident state information, then start your MA state tax return.  This will ensure you receive any credits for taxes on income which may have been taxed in CT.

Proceed through the screens in your MA return until you see credits and taxes. You should see Taxes Paid to Another State under the Credit for Taxes paid.   You can edit your information here if needed but the taxes paid to the other state should be listed in this section.

I did all this and I checked the calculations and the amounts all looked correct (for both Massachusetts and Connecticut), but when I went to file it said that I have to mail in the Massachusetts return because there is income from another state and that I cannot file electronically. I am using the downloadable version not the online one.

I recommend checking for updates at this point.  It is possible there was a form that was not available before but that is now available for filing.

You can do this by selecting the Online menu at the top.

Then select Check for Updates.
