PA Taxes - part-year resident

My wife and I retired and moved from California to Pennsylvania mid-November 2025.  We do not have any W2 income in PA.  My wife has pension income for the 6 weeks here but it is not taxable in PA. We earned a bit of interest income while in PA.  I've split everything that could be considered earned in both in CA and PA by 86% and 15%.   The PA  return shows a taxable income of about $40,000.  The interest income is nowhere near that amount.  I've gone over both the CA return and the PA return and cannot get it to change the PA Taxable Income.  It is showing a tax due of just over $1,000.  Any suggestions?

Double check:

  1. Residency part-year selected for both tax payer and spouse
  2. 1099-R forms coded correctly and questions in federal section answered
  3. 1099-R forms properly excluded on PA return
  4. Review answers for PA income vs non-PA income
  5. Check your PA-40
    1. line 1 -wages income
    2. line 2 - interest income
  6. Sch NRH -should show your total income and non-PA income

If this doesn't get you in the right direction, let us know what you are seeing on the PA return that should not be there. You need to look at all your PA forms and Schedules.   To print or view  your forms, including all worksheets:

  • In desktop, switch to Forms Mode.
  • For online:
    1. On the left side, select  Tax Tools
    2. Select Print center
    3. Select Print, save or preview this year's return
    4. If you have not paid, select pay now.

Thank you for your reply.  I figured out the problem was with the adjustments for the Interest Income.  The adjustment on the PA form was supposed to be the amount it was to be reduced by for the amount allocated to California and I was entering what I believed the Pennsylvania share was supposed to be.   Not sure that makes sense but it worked. Whew!
