Not seeing the correct amount of solar credits

You might have some carried forward to future years. Any carryforward from the Solar Energy Credit will appear on Form 5695. The amount carried forward appears on Line 16.

To enter your qualifying solar energy property:

  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in, click Take me to my return.)
  • Click the drop-down arrow next to Tax Tools (lower left of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the I'm looking for: box, type 5695.
  • In the results box, highlight 5695, residential energy credit, then click GO.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to complete this section. Solar property is entered on the Enter Any Energy-Efficient Improvements screen. (Click the screenshot below to enlarge it for reference.)

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "My Account") to search for the topic.

Qualified solar electric property costs are costs for property that uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in your home located in the United States. No costs relating to a solar panel or other property installed as a roof (or portion thereof) will fail to qualify solely because the property constitutes a structural component of the structure on which it is installed. The home doesn't have to be your main home
