North Carolina considers you to be a resident if you were present in the state for more than 183 days, unless you can show that you were only residing in NC on a temporary basis.

If you maintained a legal residence in another state, and did not reside in NC for more than 183 days, you would file a North Carolina return as a nonresident to report your wages.
