Non Wisconsin resident tax refund

Hello,

I was mistakenly taxed for WI and IL (I am an IL resident), trying to file 1NPR to get WI tax back through Turbotax.

However I am not getting the full tax back. I have some capital gains and dividends, it is included in WI tax form 1NPR and in IL. Was taxed $317, however the refund is only $85. In the form I specified a resident of IL and a non resident.

Should I not get the full amount?

Non Wisconsin resident tax refund

If you live in Illinois, but work in Wisconsin, you are only labile for Illinois tax on your WAGES.

If Wisconsin State Tax was withheld, you should get that tax refunded.

Is the Capital gains or Dividends attributed to Wisconsin?  If not, that income should not be on the Non-Resident Wisconsin Return.

Are you doing the Non-resident Wisconsin return FIRST followed by your Illinois return?

Non Wisconsin resident tax refund

KrisD15,

Thank you so much for responding,

I did my federal and IL state and then added WI to get the refund.

None of the capital gains/dividends are related to WI state. The company mistakenly took tax for IL and WI (Since the Company location address changed from IL to WI).

So should I do WI state by itself and put Zero in the earnings column and the actual tax (317) in the tax column.

Also the 1NPR has 2 columns Federal and WI.

Thanks

Yes, sometimes the order the states are done in TurboTax matters. If you did the Illinois first, it might have picked up the Wisconsin tax erroneously.

Yes, you want zero income allocated to Wisconsin but you also do not want a "credit for taxes paid to another state" on your Illinois return.

To be safe, I suggest you delete the Illinois return, do the Wisconsin non-resident return first. Allocate zero to Wisconsin. You should get all the state tax refunded. Next do the Illinois return. You'll be charged Illinois tax on all your income.

KrisD15,

Once again Thanks.

It looks like I have to enter federal info before I do WI, which is fine. I am going to start all over. Do federal(wont file yet), do Wisconsin, file Wisconsin electronically if it allows other wise print and will file paper return,

Then I will do IL and file both federal and IL electronically. I did see all the amounts are included for IL (earnings and taxes, I manually verified sort of since I am not an expert).

Thanks for your advice and help.

Will keep updated what happens.

Thanks.

Sam.
