No, if you didn't earn income from any sources in 2017, you are not required to file a tax return.

Thank you; does this apply for both federal and state taxes? Also is there any waiver I need to fill out to explain why I am not filing taxes. I have one more year of graduate school and am concerned about them asking for the 2017 taxes next year. I can put "will not file" but does that impact my standing for FAFSA.
