I moved from Illinois (where I grew up) to Washington State to start a new job there. However, it was my fault that I left my parents' address in Illinois in my employee profile of the new employer, because I thought that would be like my permanent address despite not living there.
Now in my first paycheck, my employer withheld IL state taxes. I believe next year by filing Illinois Schedule NR, I can get those incorrectly withheld state tax back. But should I ask the employer to fix my W2 too? Because they did withheld IL state taxes for one pay period. Next year am I going to receive separate W2 for IL and WA?
Q. I believe next year by filing Illinois Schedule NR, I can get those incorrectly withheld state tax back?
A. Correct. You must attach a letter of explanation, from your employer. If the move. from IL to WA, occurred in 2023, you will file as an IL part year resident return, instead of non resident.
Q. Should I ask the employer to fix my W2 too?
A. No. Am employer is unlikely to do that. The employee (you) filing a non resident (or part year resident) return is the only way to fix this.
Q. Next year am I going to receive separate W2 for IL and WA?
A. Effectively yes. Some employers issue two W-2s. More likely, you'll get one W-2 with two lines filled in for boxes 15-20. Since WA doesn't have an income tax, there may only be one entry for IL.
Be advised that this situation can sometimes be a little tricky to enter in TurboTax (TT). Once you see what your W-2 looks like, you may have to post a new question in this forum, for direction.
