My California tax return was selected for review. What documents should I send?

Hi, Today I received a letter from FTB State of California asking for a confirmation of my Tax return filing. They say that I need to send a copy of the following documentation:

- SSN cards.
- ITIN Documents.
- Forms W-2
- Forms 1099
- Copy of driver license
- Year to date paycheck stubs of 2016.

Do I have to send all these documents? Also, is it common that they are asking for a copy of the SSNs cards? Do I have to send the copy?

Thanks.

In response to the FTB's request for documentation, you should try to send as much of the requested documentation as you have available.

You should readily have copies of your Form(s) W-2 and 1099, from filing your 2016 tax returns.

If you have paycheck stubs from your pay from December or late in 2016, try to furnish copies of those to the FTB.

You should be able to provide a copy of your driver license.

If the FTB is asking for both the SSN card and ITIN documentation, it may be due to your having filed a prior return using an ITIN (Individual Tax Indentification Number), prior to your having been issued an SSN.  You would just need to provide them with a copy of the SSN, certainly not the original card.  If you don't have an SSN card available, you can obtain a replacement SSN card from the Social Security Administration:
