Edit your Personal Info:

  1. Open you return if not already open.
  2. Go back to your Personal Info section in the program.
  3. There will be a question asking what was your state of residency on 12/31/24.
  4. The next question asks if you lived somewhere else in 2024.
  5. If you indicate "Yes", a new section will appear asking where you lived before in 2024.  List your previous state.
  6. The follow-up question asks what date did you become a resident of your CURRENT state.

"Yes I made money in the previous state I lived in"

In that case, on the part-year resident return for the previous state, enter ALL the income you earned there for the entire tax year including the portion that you earned after the move.  Answer No to the question about having "other state income".  Then on the part-year resident return for the new state, enter all your income earned after the move.

Complete your previous state return before you do the new state return, so that the new state will credit you for the tax paid to the old state on the portion of your income taxed by both.

The "other state income" question is looking for income earned in a non-resident state.  All your income was earned in a part-year resident state.

As far as I know, New Jersey is the only state that requires the taxpayer to file both a non-resident and a part-year resident return in your situation.

In MY INFO  --- did you indicate that you moved during 2024?   Did you indicate that you made money in another state in 2024?

Go back through the screens in MY INFO and check the way you answered the questions.

If you moved in 2024, enter the date that you began living in the NEW state.
