Married filing separately for federal and state but MA NR return is picking up spousal income

Filing as married filing separately on both federal and stat tax returns (California and Massachusetts - California resident). Turbotax is picking up my spouse's income on line A of MA Form 1 NR/PY (Easystep prompt asks for his income so entered that and it shows up in MA Info worksheet). But then getting a smart error on MA Form 1 as line 14f is greater than Line A due to inclusion of spouse's income. Seems like spouse's income should not be included in MA return given same filing status as federal. Turbotax will not allow manual override.

Is this a turbotax error or should spousal income be included in the MA return line A?

Follow these steps to allocate the income correctly:

  1. Go to your Massachusetts state return.
  2. Proceed through the interview until you reach the screen titled "Income Allocation," "Allocate Your Income to Massachusetts,".
  3.  When asked how you want to allocate your income, do not select the option that uses a percentage or automatic allocation based on the federal return. You must select the option that says "I will manually enter my Massachusetts income."
  4. You will be presented with a list of all income sources from your federal return.
  5. For "Massachusetts Portion" you must enter "0" for any income that is strictly your spouse's.  Enter only your specific, separate MA-source income.
  6. Save these entries. The software should now calculate your Line A (Total Federal Income) based only on your separate income, resolving the error on Line 14f.

Thank you. I tried that but only my wages (correctly) show up on the allocation screen. My spouse's wages do not show up as needing to be allocated

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number  (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)
