MA Resident with RI Casino Wins

I am using TurboTax Deluxe 2021 and am a MA resident.  I have some RI Casino gambling wins (under $1k after deducting losses).  I received a 1099 from RI Casino and entered it in the Federal section. I have downloaded MA and it is noting the gambling total win under Schedule X (apparently I can't reduce the winnings by the losses).

However, shouldn't Tubotax prompt me to file in RI as well? I I believe it did so in the past - but it was for a larger win.  This year it is not mentioning it at all. Thoughts?

Whether TurboTax prompts you for a Rhode Island return depends on what information is on your W2-G. It there is a state code, state income and/or state withholding, TurboTax will probably ask you about it.

TurboTax will prompt you if you say you made money in another state.

If you are using TurboTax Online,

  • Click on My Info in the left column
  • Scroll down to Other state income and Edit
  • Say YES you made money in a state other than Massachusetts and select Rhode Island. Continue.
  • Click on State in the left column
  • If you don't see Rhode Island, select Add another state

You do have to file a nonresident income tax return for gambling winnings. Rhode Island says:

Winnings and prizes received from the Rhode Island Lottery and other gambling establishments are taxable under the Rhode Island personal income tax and are to be included in the income of both residents and nonresidents alike.

I am using the downloaded version of Turbotax Deluxe.  My first attempt at completing the W2G info - I left the state name blank - as that is what Turbotax told me to do -  if it was not included on the W2G.  But later Turbotax asked me to add in the state  - which I did. I  also included the State Payer's ID # .

So - although Turbotax did not ask me to complete a Rhode Island tax form - I should try to download it - is that correct?  And since MA is taxing me on this money - would I receive a credit for same in RI?

Would it be cleaner if I deleted the W2G and started over to see if it will now prompt me to download RI?

Thank you.

Yes. Download Rhode Island. You owe tax to Rhode Island and Massachusetts will give you a credit for tax paid to Rhode Island.

You can delete your W-2G. However, to get the download prompt you can

  • Click on the Personal Info tab
  • Scroll down to Other State Income
  • Say Yes, I made money in states other than Massachusetts and select Rhode Island

TurboTax recommends that you complete your nonresident state return before doing your resident state, otherwise you may have to enter the credit information manually.
