Where are you having trouble entering the states?   In My Info for states you lived in, or in the area where you enter which states you earned income in?   What three states?  Was one of them a state with no state income tax?

In the Personal information section be sure to answer that you lived in more than one state.  It will only allow you to enter one extra state in that area.

When you get to the State section, you will then be able to select the 3rd state (it may already be listed based on information that you have already entered.).

As you walk through and answer the questions, TurboTax will help you figure out what you need to do for each state.

Correct....at least one of them would be considered a non-resident state.

So, the exact details of where you lived/worked during the year....both before and after too, and how long , would be needed for us to suggest something.

Examples:

1)  have primary residence in Iowa, but travel to work for the summer at a National Park, 3 months in Colorado, and Fall/Winter 4 Months in AZ then return to Iowa.   Iowa is full year and, the other two states are not states you "lived" in...you were just there as nonresident.

or maybe

2)  Lived for years in VA....moved to MO to work & live 3Months, then moved to Illinois and stayed there...

The only way to do that taxwise...is to treat the middle 3 Mos in MO would be considered living/working there as a non-resident, especially if you didn't get a new Driver's lisc. or register to vote....And iIn the Federal Personal Info section you would indicate that you "moved" to IL from VA on the date you actually took up residence in IL....and the time/work in MO was just temporary as a non-resident.

Details..details...can be all over the place, especially if one of the places you "lived" is just a vacation home, like a winter condo in FL.

The state question (“Tell us the state(s) you lived in”) in Personal Info is less important than the actual state programs. The answers to the state questions in Personal Info don’t go anywhere outside TurboTax so if you lived in three states but can only list two, you will be fine as long as you correctly fill out the state programs.

TurboTax uses “Tell us the state(s) you lived in” to populate information in the state returns such as whether to file a full year, part year or non-resident and the number of days or months you lived in each state. However, TurboTax will ask you to confirm this information and you can change it (with one or two exceptions). In those times when you can’t change what's flowing into the state program, you can go back to Personal Info and swap states or make adjustments, but this should not be a problem in almost all cases.
