For my son. He lived in IL for the first 7 months of 2025 and worked in MO, thus having MO income tax withheld. He then moved to MO for the last 5 months of the year. The income split is about 80% (IL living) to 20% (MO living), as he didn't work much in the last half of the year. Any advice on how to get TurboTax to handle this properly? It seems to want him to pay a large tax bill in both states. Thanks in advance.

On his Missouri tax return, he needs to apply for a credit for taxes paid to Illinois. You will see an option for that when you work through the credits section of the Missouri tax return. First, in the general information section you see when you start the Missouri return, he needs to indicate that he is filing as a Part-year resident filing as a Resident.
Later, on the screen that says You've Finished Your Missouri Return, find the section that says Taxes and Credits. Start or update that section and you will see an option to apply for a credit for taxes paid to another state. You will see where you can enter the tax paid to Illinois and you will get credit for that against the Missouri income tax. You will need to mail in the Missouri tax return with a copy of the Illinois return.
Thanks..just a quick clarification. You stated, "you can enter the tax paid to Illinois". I assume this is the taxes owed to IL for 2025. Since he had no IL income tax withheld during 2025, it would be the amount that TurboTax calculated he owed for 2025 in the software. Is that correct???
Again, in advance, thanks so much
Yes, that is correct. Enter the income that was taxed to both IL and MO, and the tax liability on the IL return calculated by TurboTax.
